Deductions for work expenses

What you may and cannot deduct from your income is the cost of the things you pay for when working or earning a living.

You have to follow these three golden guidelines in order to be eligible for a deduction for work-related expenses:

  • You must have used the funds and received no payment in return.
  • The expenditure needs to be closely related to how you make money.
  • To verify it, you need a record, generally in the form of a receipt.

You are only eligible to deduct the part of the cost that is directly connected to your employment if it was expended for both personal and professional reasons.

You are not eligible to deduct if:

  • You don’t keep track of the costs you incur for employment.
  • Someone else covers the costs, like an employer
  • expenditure or pays you back for it.
